The merger of M6 and TF1 is worth the detour

TELEVISION – A program “Who wants to win houses for sale?”, Do you like it? The TF1 group will buy 30% of M6’s shares for merger, which should be effective in several months. The channel had been on sale for several months by its main shareholder, the German group Bertelsmann, via its subsidiary RTL Group. The announcement made official on May 17 did not escape jokes on social networks.

The marriage of the first and the third audiovisual channel in France would constitute a giant television player exceeding France TV with more than 30% of audience share. A merger which Twitter had fun by imagining new programs made up of several shows from TF1 and M6: “Friday everything is allowed at first sight”, “Canteloup is looking for an apartment”, tweet Pierre-Antoine Damecour, columnist for the channel L ‘ Team and on M6. “The queens of teleshopping,” wrote another.

The prize for the best diversion goes, as often, to @GuillaumeTC. Used to crossing images of personalities to make his followers laugh, the Internet user also took hold of the announcement of this takeover to show, under the hashtag #CroisonsLes, the chef Philippe Etchebest in the skin of the actress Mimi Mathy alias “Josephine Guardian Angel”.

To the chagrin of Internet users, this takeover between these two large television groups will not cause the outright merger of the programs of “The Voice” and “Meilleur Pâtissier”, for example. M6 broadcasts are expected to remain as is with no major changes for now.

The new television giant, which will represent three quarters of the advertising market and of which Nicolas de Tavernost could become the CEO, will not see the light of day so quickly. According to a media observer quoted by AFP, “the implementation of such an acquisition could take from 18 months to 2 years”, knowing that a project must be submitted to the CSA to renew the authorization to issue M6 in 2023, which, if accepted, will block any disposal project for five years.
