Mercedes-Benz is working diligently on the new generation of the AMG GT model, which in its top variant will be a plug-in hybrid. At least that’s what the British website Autocar claims, but it hasn’t been confirmed by the automaker yet.
The new generation AMG GT, codenamed C192, is expected to have four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines under the hood, with the exception of the four-liter V8 with the designation M178, which will be in-line engines. Among these, the four-cylinder M139 should be mentioned, which thanks to an electric compressor should offer 380 HP and 480 Nm, just like in the AMG SL 43.
According to the British, that eight-cylinder will also be available in a plug-in hybrid version under the designation 63 SE Performance. Below that, the four-door AMG GT has 842 horsepower and 1,470 lb-ft of torque, so it’s possible the new model will offer just as much power. This would make it one of the most powerful hybrid coupes on offer, the parameters would surpass the Ferrari 296 GTB and the Lamborghini Sián.

What’s not yet known is whether it will get the 6.1 kWh battery from the four-door AMG GT or a different one. After all, for such a compact car, there isn’t much room for the hybrid system’s battery. But we can safely assume that the electricity will be there for the best possible performance, not the lowest possible fuel consumption.
All engines are to be mated to a new nine-speed gearbox, just like the Mercedes-AMG SL of the R232 generation. The new AMG GT will share a chassis platform with this car. However, it will receive changes due to both the fixed roof and the liftback-style opening rear.
A major difference to the current AMG GT is the abandonment of the gearbox concept on the rear axle; it should classically be placed behind the engine. This will allow for the installation of all-wheel drive and a rear axle steering system.
The bodywork, which should be more of an evolution of the current AMG GT than a revolutionary change, will probably be a bit bigger to accommodate two emergency rear seats. It should be made from a combination of steel, aluminum, magnesium and carbon.
