The members of the Christian Union party must take a stricter approach to the cabinet

The members of the House of Representatives of the ChristenUnie must be stricter with the cabinet. The members of the smallest coalition party announced this at a conference in Zwolle. More than 70 percent of ChristenUnie members supported the proposal, which calls for a stricter approach.

In the extreme case, a motion of no confidence or censure against government officials “who contribute to an unreliable administrative culture” should not be shunned, according to the petitioners. Ministers and state secretaries can be dismissed with a vote of no confidence.

Problematic behavior

The petitioners argue that the party is partly responsible for maintaining an “unreliable governance culture” if ministers are never slapped. “We need to be clearer in disapproving of problematic behaviour,” said one of the petitioners.

Minister De Jonge was mentioned in the explanation as an example, following a recent debate about the mouth cap deal† Also mentioned was Prime Minister Rutte, “who has a selective memory when it suits him”.

The cabinet consists of three ministers of the ChristenUnie: Minister Schouten for Poverty Policy, Minister Staghouwer of Agriculture and State Secretary Van Ooijen of VWS.

Destructive Role Play

Party leader Segers acknowledged in his speech that confidence in politics still needs to be restored, especially after the lengthy formation. The ChristenUnie leader spoke of a “wretched political year” and a “parody of politics”.

According to Segers, the latter is due to both the coalition and the opposition. “We’ve gotten into a kind of destructive role-playing game that pulls us all down, which just isn’t right for us.”

The party leader called the recovery a “desert journey” that he doesn’t even know if it’s over yet. He argued that ideals and ideas should be discussed more often in The Hague.
