Jõgeva mayor Angela Saksing announced at the beginning of the week that she will resign from the position of mayor, and since the position of mayor belongs to the Center Party according to the coalition agreement, Jõgeva Central Party members first offered the position to the former deputy mayor of Tallinn, Taavi Aasa, Tartu Postimees writes.
Vice-chairman of the Center Party faction of the Jõgeva municipal council Peep Moose said on Tuesday that the negotiations regarding filling the position of mayor are going on with a strong candidate who has experience as a municipal manager, and it is a person from Jõgeva County. He promised to announce the name when an agreement is reached.
On Friday, things became clear and it became known that the former mayor of Tallinn and Riigikogu member Taavi Aas has given his consent to become Jõgeva municipality mayor. However, the new mayor can take office after the council has approved his candidacy. This issue will probably come to the council as early as next week.
Although Taavi Aasa’s jobs have been in the capital in the last couple of decades, he lives permanently in Põltsamaa. Aas was also part of the Riigikogu before the parliamentary elections held in March.
