The Meilandjes’ Self-Service Guest House: Opening, Challenges, and Martien’s Temporary Accommodation

After a successful test weekend, the Meilandjes receive their first real guests in their ‘self-service guest house’. Maxime has little confidence in it before the official opening. “If I may make an estimate, I think they will last a year,” said the daughter of Martien and Erica. Maxime shoots the necessary photos of the guest house for the site. At the time of the first bookings, they were not there yet. “That’s actually very strange,” laughs Erica. “People do trust us, which is nice.” Unfortunately, the laughter dies quickly, especially Martien.

“A day before the opening and then people start throwing eggs. Strange, isn’t it”, the former lord of the castle sighs as he pulls a cloth over the windows. “Why are you going to throw eggs?” And when the municipality also fires proverbial eggs at them by tapping the Meilandjes on the fingers about the permit the day before the opening, Martien breaks.

“He’s totally upset,” says Erica. It explains how the fork is in the stem. “We have received a permit to demolish the part. The municipality has said: yes, that is good. Now they say: there is no longer a house, only a guest house, which is not in accordance with the zoning plan.” And so the Meilandjes would be in violation if they let their guests sleep there. “It went wrong with that demolition permit.”

“Something always goes wrong with us,” Maxime adds to her parents’ disappointment. Meanwhile, Martien is worried about the twelve boxes of oranges that are ready for all breakfasts. And then the reality lord decides to sacrifice himself: he spends the night in a part of the guest house that is actually still in ruins, but that way they comply with the rules of the municipality. “Then we don’t have to disappoint those people either.”

And so it happened that Martien gets ready for a night in the boarding house, on a stretcher. With a construction lamp as mood lighting. A viewer comes, perhaps too late now, with a genius solution for the Meilandjes. ‘If they are still looking for someone to live in Martien’s temporary room, I would say: only one person is completely suitable for this. Our ‘nothing wrong with that, totally fine’ Olof.’ Olof was indeed having a good time in Marian’s engine room B&B Full of Love.

Chateau Meiland can be seen every Monday at 8.30 pm on SBS6 and can be viewed here.

At the time, Aran Bade spoke to Martien and Erica about the haggling with the municipality and Martien’s temporary accommodation:
