The meeting between Rodin and Giacometti returns to Madrid after the coronavirus crisis | Madrid

The museums and exhibition halls gradually return to Madrid’s cultural life. The Mapfre Foundation recovers from this Tuesday the sample that it left halfway due to the sanitary measures that the fight against the coronavirus has caused. Rodin-Giacometti which unifies the universes of two of the great sculptors in history, reopens with a capacity reduced to a third and its duration, which should have ended in May, is extended until August 23.

Admission will be free for health personnel, state security forces and bodies, and firefighters, in appreciation of their work in recent months. The sanitary measures will be the same as that of the rest of the museums in phase 1: compulsory use of face masks, hydroalcoholic gel dispensers and without instructions, audio guides, guided tours and brochures.

The reopening of the Mapfre Foundation joins that of the public museums of the Community of Madrid, such as the CA2M Dos de Mayo Art Center and the Picasso Museum-Eugenio Arias Collection, which began to restart their activity for the public from May 26. The great museums located in Madrid, such as the Prado, the Reina Sofía and the Thyssen, as well as the National Library of Spain, will wait until Saturday, June 6. However, other state museums in the city, including the Sorolla Museum and the Museum of Romanticism, will remain closed for the time being.

The exhibition

Although they hardly coincided in time (Rodin passed away in 1917, when Giacometti was a teenager), there are many connections in his works. The most evident is that both shared Antoine Bourdelle, apprentice in the first’s workshop and teacher of the second that connects their universes. The two essential names of sculpture from the last centuries establish in this exhibition an unprecedented dialogue between the two.

In total there are two hundred sculptures, photographs and drawings, reflecting how both sculptors had, despite not knowing each other, common themes, and dedicated themselves to portraying human emotions.

Among the works that can be seen in the exhibition are the monument The Bourgeois of Calais Rodin or The Walking Man Giacometti, although the latter will only be exhibited until the end of June and then travel to Paris to be part of an exhibition, explains the foundation in a note.
