The meeting. A man accused of murdering his girlfriend

Unknown to the courts and in psychiatric treatment for several months, due to depressive episodes, the alleged executioner turned his weapon against him immediately after stabbing the victim, 49 years old and mother of three children. The accusation was pronounced at the Saint-Denis hospital center where the man is still hospitalized. His placement in pre-trial detention “will be carried out in medical custody until possible integration in a penitentiary institution with medical authorization”, the prosecution specified.

The couple had been living together for six years and there was “no history of violence,” the prosecutor said.

This is the second time this year that a woman has died under the blows of her spouse in Reunion. According to data from the judicial authorities, Reunion is the third department in France by number of violence against women. In 2021, seven complaints of domestic violence were filed every day. In fifteen years, 53 women have been victims of femicide on the island.
