This may go beyond 2020. The partial unemployment measures, from which several million French people benefit and which are currently planned until the end of the year, will be extended if necessary, affirmed
Bruno the Mayor. Even if “for the moment it is not planned”, said Thursday the Minister of the Economy on France 2, a few hours after the
presentation of the 100 billion euro economic recovery plan.

“For the most exposed sectors – hotels, cafes, restaurants, events – until the end of the year there will be partial unemployment. If afterwards we have to maintain it, we will maintain it, ”said the Minister.

“We have always responded”

“For the moment this is not planned but we have always responded present”, he added, referring to “this anguish of millions of French for their employment”. Set up from the start of confinement in mid-March, the partial unemployment system, limited to six months, provides for compensation of 84% of the net salary for the employee (72% from October).

A long-term partial activity device, presented by the executive as an “anti-layoffs shield”, was also introduced at the end of July for some sectors facing a long-lasting reduction in activity, such as aeronautics. It authorizes a reduction in working time up to a maximum of 40% of non-working hours, subject to a company or branch agreement, over a period of 6 to 24 months.

About 2.4 million private sector employees were on short-time work in July, more than two million less than in June, according to an estimate at the end of August from Dares, the statistics service of the Ministry of Labor. They were 8.8 million in April.
