Ratzeburg (pm). On Monday, May 8th, the German historical drama “The Measured Man” will be shown in the film club of the Burgtheater Ratzeburg. The performance begins at 8 p.m. in the main building.
Berlin, late 19th century. Alexander Hoffmann (Leonard Scheicher) is an ambitious ethnology doctoral student at the Friedrich Wilhelm University. When a delegation of Herero and Nama from “German Southwest Africa” traveled to Berlin as part of the “German Colonial Exhibition”, Hoffmann met the group’s interpreter, Kezia Kambazembi (Girley Charlene Jazama). Hoffmann developed an intense interest in the Herero and Nama – and after meeting and talking to them contradicted the current evolutionist racial theory. Shortly thereafter, the rebellion of the Herero and Nama in the colony “German South West Africa” led to war with the German occupiers. Hoffmann travels the country under the protection of the imperial army and collects artefacts and objects of art left behind for the Berlin Museum of Ethnology. In truth, however, he continues to look for evidence for his thesis – and for Kezia. On site, Hoffmann witnessed how German soldiers carried out the extermination order with inhuman hardness. But the ethnologist also crosses moral boundaries when he agrees to send his Berlin professor (Peter Simonischek) skulls and skeletons of dead Herero for research purposes… More information at www.filmclub-ratzeburg.de
