The mayor of Zirou, Giorgos Zygouris, passed away at the age of 60 in the early hours of Tuesday, October 15, in Preveza. The event has caused sadness in Epirus, and especially in Philippiada.
The tragic news was announced by the municipality through its announcement. In detail, he stated that “It is with unbearable sadness and pain that we say goodbye to our Mayor Georgios Zygouris, who today, October 15, 2024, prematurely lost the battle for life that he had been fighting for the last time. Giorgos Zygouris was fighting for his life in the last months, but he did not succeed and ended up in the hospital, where he was treated.
Who was the mayor of Zirou?
Giorgos Zygouris was born in Gorgomylos of Prevezi, in the municipality of Ziros. He finished school in Philippiada and studied at the Polytechnic School of the University of Patras in the Department of Civil Engineering.
He served his military service in the Corps of Engineers and the 733rd Military Works Directorate.
Since 1990 he returned to Philippiada, where he maintained a Civil Engineering Technical Office based in Philippiada with activities such as studies, supervision of Civil Engineering projects, issuance of building permits, compilation of topographical diagrams, national land registry, according to epiruspost.gr.
He was a Holder of a Research Degree and a Certified Selective Investment Member of the National Register of Certified Auditors of the Ministry of Finance.
He had worked as a Special Scientific Associate in the Prefectural Government of Preveza, as well as an Executive of the Special Management Service of the URBAN II Community Initiative and as an Executive of the Special Management Service (Administrative P.E.P. Epirus).
He was involved in the public affairs of the municipality of Ziros from 2010 to 2014 when he served as the head of the major opposition of the municipality.
In the 2023 elections, with the “Together for the Citizen” faction, he was elected mayor of Zirou for the first time.
