The mayor of Odessa was arrested for corruption

The Ukrainian Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office announced today that Odessa Mayor Gennady Trukhanov was arrested in connection with an investigation into alleged corruption, Reuters reported.

Trukhanov was elected mayor of Odessa in 2014 and has been under investigation since 2017 over allegations of abuse, which he denies.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine (SAC) ordered Trukhanov to be remanded in custody for a period of two months, with the alternative of posting bail of 13.6 million hryvnias (nearly $372,000) in a case of embezzlement with state funds during the purchase by the municipal council of the “Krayan” plant. The court partially granted the prosecution’s request, as the accused did not post a previously ordered bond, the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office said.

On April 25, VAKS set a bail of 30.8 million hryvnias ($844,000) for the mayor of Odessa.

On July 9, 2019, the Malinovsky District Court of Odesa found Trukhanov and several officials from the local municipal council not guilty, but the prosecutor’s office protested this decision. On February 11, 2021, the Appeals Chamber of the VAKS overturned the acquittal of all defendants in the case and remanded it for a new trial.
