The newly appointed mayor of New York, Eric Adams, has recognized this Tuesday that, like many citizens, he does not feel “safe” when traveling on the New York subway, which is why he has opted to reduce crime in the city.
The mayor has spoken these words just a few days after a woman lost her life in the New York subway after being pushed onto the tracks and being run over by a train. “Our battle in the suburban system is to fight against the perception of fear that cases like this may occur,” he said at the time.
Now, Adams has acknowledged that he shares the feeling of concern and fear with many fellow citizens when he travels by subway, and has revealed that his administration will work with the aim of reducing crime in the New York suburban, CNN points out.
“We know we have work. We’re going to do both: we’re going to reduce crime and we’re going to make sure New Yorkers feel safe in our subway system. They don’t feel that way right now,” the local leader acknowledged.
Adams, a former captain of the New York Police Department and member of the Democratic Party, took office two weeks ago as mayor of the city, thus becoming the second black mayor, after David Dinkins.
During his election campaign promises and speeches, the issue of security and public order was present, an aspect that, according to the US press, would have been one of the determining points for the citizens to raise him to the New York Mayor’s Office.
According to data from the New York Police, crime in the city has increased in recent times and, according to the latest balance published, crime rose by more than 21 percent in November compared to the same date of the previous year.
Adams and New York Governor Kathy Hochul earlier this year announced an initiative to address both public safety on the subway — by sending more officers — and address the homeless crisis by deploying of trained mental health staff throughout the city.
