The mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, has decided to cut by 30% the budget for next year of the Municipal Music Band, the oldest cultural institution in the city, with more than 150 years of history, which has been languishing for a long time with just over a dozen members and with a future that appears increasingly uncertain.
But the situation of abandonment that the City Council has been suffering for many years has placed it on the verge of disappearance.
Far from seeking a solution, the mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, has decided cut 30% the budget for next year allocated for this purpose.
Specifically, the municipal accounts for 2024 assign the music group 264.868,52 euros compared to 377,224.95 euros for the current year.
They are more than 100,000 euros lessin a new step backwards that does not invite us to think about a change in the position of the PP government team.
The Marbella Municipal Band carries years dying and in April 2021, in desperation, they launched a distress message through a municipal television program.
But practically nothing has changed since then and there are just over a dozen musicians left.
As a result of that public complaint, also in April 2021, Opción Sampedreña (OSP) carried out a motion to the Plenary to solve the situation of the band, which was supported by PSOE and Ciudadanos, but in which the PP voted against.
A few months later, in September 2021, the City Council signed a contract with the Marbella Battalion Musical Group for just over 90,000 euros for three years.
In this way, it privatized the accompaniment with music at events such as the fairs of San Bernabé and San Pedro de Alcántara, or the festivities of the Virgen del Carmen or del Pilar, among others.
The lack of defense by the PP of an institution with 154 years of history is very striking and a clear example of the lack of commitment to the cultural heritage of the municipality.
