Crowds of bird watchers have regularly turned up in an Orange County, California neighborhood to gape at a snowy owl, a species normally found in the Arctic, Canada and several northern US states.
His current home is a rooftop perch in the warm town of Cypress.
“It’s totally unique as a birder,” said Vic Leipzig, who teaches birding at Saddleback College The Orange County Register this week.
The newspaper reported that local bird experts speculated that the owl may have arrived in Southern California by ship or could be an escaped captive bird.
“It’s a beautiful thing to see,” Leipzig said. “The fact that there were so many people there watching this was very exciting for me.”
