There were all doubts surrounding ‘The Marvels’ and it is true that the new MCU adventure is somewhat better than expected, but that has not prevented it from taking a hit at the box office. Just like ahead Deadline‘The Marvels’ is on track to have the worst opening of a Marvel movie to date.
Bump
The first estimates suggest that ‘The Marvels’ will gross between 47 and 55 million dollars during its first weekend at the North American box office – on Friday it is expected to add between 21 and 22 million, including the income from the previews on Thursday night. If nothing changes in its favor, that would mean in all cases that it would snatch the red lantern from ‘The Incredible Hulk’, which debuted with 55.4 million in 2008. Just ahead we would find ‘Ant-Man’ with 57.2 million .
It also doesn’t help that the forecasts have been updated several times downwards, since not so long ago 80 million were expected for ‘The Marvels’ during its first weekend. That figure dropped this week to 60 and the sad reality suggests that it will be even below that figure.
In its favor it has the fact that the end of the actors’ strike allows it to receive a boost from its protagonists, especially from Brie Larson, to encourage people to go to the cinema to see it. There is always the possibility that Marvel fans have preferred to first see the end of season 2 of ‘Loki’, which also indicates that it will be the definitive closure of the series, and then tomorrow or Sunday they will come to see ‘The Marvels’.
All in all, these figures are a calamitous result for a film that is estimated to have had a budget of 220 million dollars, to which another 100 would have to be added in marketing. Taking this start into account, only a miracle at the level of ‘Elemental’ could prevent it from being a historic failure.
