These are difficult times for superhero movies. The genre is going through a pretty low moment after 15 years of linking one success after another. It seems that the public no longer connects in the same way, which has been seriously reflected in the box office of the big premieres. But particularly damaging has been the blow suffered by The Marvels, the long-awaited sequel to Captain Marvel which, with its commercial life already over, has become the biggest failure in the history of the Marvel cinematic universe.
In 2008, The Incredible Hulk closed its run in theaters with $264.7 million grossed. The film starring Edward Norton was, during all this time, Marvel’s worst box office film. Not even the premieres in times of Covid were below that figure. That is until The Marvels decided to shatter the negative record with a real disaster.
With 206 million dollars raised, we are already talking about the biggest failure in the history of the House of Ideas. The Marvels have signed terrible data in movie theaters all over the planet. The blow that Brie Larson’s film has taken is particularly strong, if we take into account that The Marvels’ investment exceeded $400 million between production and marketing. A disaster that has caused the opening of time for reflection within Marvel. We will see what they plan for the future to get out of the negative spiral.
