Exciting fight scenes, fast chases and funny remarks: The superheroine film “The Marvels” is also suitable for genre beginners.
Wow! At the end of the series “Ms. Marvel”, main character Kamala (Iman Vellani) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) suddenly swap places in one of the famous Marvel end credits scenes. The new film “The Marvels” picks up exactly at this point: Carol Danvers stands puzzled in young Kamala’s room, which is littered with Captain Marvel posters.
The teenager has superpowers himself and is a big fan of the heroine. Now Kamala is finally embarking on her first big adventure – and she couldn’t be more excited. With her naive and enthusiastic manner, she is reminiscent of the young Peter Parker in the Avengers film “Civil War”, who couldn’t believe that he was allowed to fight side by side with his idols.
However, Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel do not remain a duo, because another heroine is affected by the mysterious connection with swapping places: Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who die-hard Marvel fans should already know from the series “WandaVision”, among others. Together they find out why their abilities are connected and work through old conflicts.
But don’t worry: Even if you’ve lost track of the Marvel universe and don’t recognize the many little surprises and connections, you’ll be fine with “The Marvels”. There are always flashbacks to old scenes from the Marvel universe and the plot itself is not overly complicated. “The Marvels” – like many other superhero and science fiction films before it – tells the story of a struggle for resources. The involuntarily connected trio tries to stop the Kree, who are attacking several planets to steal their resources.
The strength of the film is that the Kree are not portrayed as one-sidedly evil. You learn why they even need these resources in their homeland of Hala. In this context, Captain Marvel is also shown quite ambivalently. By destroying the Kree AI in the film “Captain Marvel,” it initiated a process that made Hala an almost uninhabitable planet.
Another plus point is the diverse cast. Not only the casting of the main roles and extras, but also the choice of director Nia DaCosta shows that Hollywood has evolved in recent years.
As befits a real blockbuster, “The Marvels” is also peppered with exciting fight scenes, fast chases and funny remarks. The visit to the planet Aladna, where the inhabitants communicate with each other through song and dance like in a musical, also creates some comical moments – especially when it turns out that Captain Marvel is apparently married to Prince Yan (Park Seo-joon).
The film is held together by a much more absurd element: Flerken. Although these creatures look like cute cats from the outside, they can shoot monstrous tentacles from their mouths. In addition, they are apparently able to swallow whole people and later spit them out again – at least physically unharmed.
Overall, “The Marvels” fits well into the previous Marvel film series with its story, action scenes and humor. The visually stunning space scenes come into their own, especially on the big screen. The only point of criticism: Apart from the diverse cast, the superhero film doesn’t have much new to offer. Fans of the series should still get their money’s worth.
