The Marvels is the most recent production of the so-called Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a film that marked a new stage for the superhero producer, but on the negative side.
Since the release of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel has not been able to recover or find a film with the same success and, its last premiere showed how its formula is beginning to stop working among fans.
According to box office data, in its first weekend in the United States the film only collected a total of 47 million dollars from Friday to this Sunday, which becomes the worst brand in a opening weekend for a movie from the so-called MCU.
Prior to this, the worst premiere had been “The Incredible Hulk” in 2008 with a total of 55 million dollars, a film that at first seemed not to count within the MCU and that starred Edward Norton, who no longer appeared again. in the role of the superhero due to several problems and gave way to Mark Ruffalo, who plays him to this day.
At the international level the figures were not encouraging either, raising a total of 110 million dollars, which also places it among the worst figures in all of Marvel. This would barely be close to reaching the film’s budget, which was $130 million, another amount that places it as one of the lowest-cost productions in the MCU.
Likewise, it seems that it will be a long way from achieving the success of the first Captain Marvel movie, which grossed a total of $1.1 billion worldwide.
In 2023 there are three films from the so-called “House of Ideas” of superheroes that had their premiere, along with The Marvels there was “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” which raised a total of 476.1 million dollars and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” with a final box office figure of 845.6 million dollars.
The worst premieres with The Marvels in the MCU
As for the list of the five worst premieres in the history of the MCU, along with The Marvels now in first place and “The Incredible Hulk” in second, these are the other three films that complete the worst five.
“Ant-Man” from 2015 is the third worst, having a profit in its opening weekend of $57.2 million. Initially the figure was due to the little knowledge that the general public had of the character, but it ended up with a good amount of 519.3 million in total.
“Captain America: The First Avenger” from 2011 is in fourth place with a total of 65.1 million dollars, the fifth film in the MCU and the last before the premiere of The Avengers. Its final box office number was $370.6 million.
“Thor” from 2011 is in fifth place with 65.7 million dollars, in the presentation of the character played by Chris Hemsworth and which ended with a total of 449.3 million dollars.
Just to mention the next one on the list, it is “The Eternals”, another of the releases after the era of “Avengers: Endgame” and which had a total of 71.3 million dollars in profit in its first weekend, despite to be directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, and with Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek among its protagonists.
After “The Marvels” and, due to the actors’ strike that recently ended in Hollywood, by 2024 only one MCU film will be released and it is “Deadpool 3” with the arrival of the character played by Ryan Reynolds alongside Hugh Jackman as Wolverine to the main Marvel universe in a production that causes a lot of expectation.
