Scene from elsewhere during the Shanghai Masters 1000 qualifiers which are currently taking place while waiting for the end of the Beijing Open so that the top seeds can join Shanghai.

the Australian Marc Polmans who had succeeded in his first qualifying match against the Russian Alibek Kachmazov was directly disqualified during his second qualifying match against the Italian Stefano Napolitano while leading the match 7-6 6-6.

A disqualification is not rare in tennis but that of Polmans deserves the Palme d’Or. In a moment of frustration, the Australian hit the ball and it landed on the referee’s head.

The blow to the referee was violent and as stipulated by the ATP rules led to the immediate disqualification of Polmans who will bite his fingers for this loss of nerve which costs him a chance to enter the main draw of a masters 1000 and to win some important points for his ranking as well as a nice sum of money for his own development.

Here is the video moment shared on the TennisActu X account:

Frustration leads to nothing

If the blood is boiling during a match, which is totally understandable, a loss of control which involves the physical integrity of a third person, whether a referee, a spectator, the player opposite or even a collector is unacceptablethe ATP rules are clear on this subject and no one is worried about it except ask Novak Djokovic who was disqualified at the US Open in 2020 for hitting a linesman.

Once again, let me point out the loss of nerves on a court. Yes, losing doesn’t feel good, making gratuitous or stupid mistakes even less so, but that doesn’t justify an explosion of disproportionate anger, in tennis we tolerate breaking rackets, insulting or attacking the referee verbally; this is not the healthiest of ways but at least it allows tension to be released in return for a code violation and some minimal penalties and any player must never exceed this situation.

An example that is close to my heart is that of Rafael Nadal, the Spaniard – Who has had altercations with players and referees during his career has never in his entire life done soracket or hit a ball out of rage or desperation, if he can then why can’t the others? We are human of course but we remain masters of our decisions, and we must tell ourselves that if things do not go as planned, it is certainly not the fault of the racket or anyone else, but of the one who holds the racket in his hands.

Finally, at the risk of repeating myself, no scenario confers the legitimacy of putting a third person in danger.
