The market share of electric vehicles is growing in 16 lagging European countries

I recently studied the growing market share of electric cars in 15 European countries as electric cars become more popular. From 15.9% of the market share of accessory vehicles in Ireland to 86.1% of the market share of accessory vehicles in Norway, these countries are entering the mass market stage with the introduction of new technology (adoption of additive vehicles). In the case of all-electric vehicles (BEVs), the market share ranged from 5.7% in Belgium to 64.5% in Norway. They are 15 leaders in the transformation of electric cars in Europe, and they only add China to the list of 16 best countries in the world. What about the rest of Europe?

One of the most exciting things about the growing market share of electric vehicles in Europe is its proliferation. Instead of seeing rapid growth in only 3 or 4 countries, growth is taking over the whole continent. Of course, this is largely due to EU-wide requirements for car manufacturers to reduce the carbon footprint of vehicles that sell or pay huge fines. However, the growth of electric car sales in Europe is uneven. If you go east or south, the market share of electric vehicles in these countries will decrease dramatically. However, we are also seeing a rapid increase in the market share of electric cars in Eastern and Southern Europe, which is closer to what you would see in the United States than in the Netherlands. Let’s walk through these remaining 16 markets and see what happens.

Note that the period of these analyzes is 2012 to 2021, and this report looks at both the market for electric vehicles as a whole and the market for battery-electric vehicles as a whole. If you only care about BEV, you can ignore the purple bar charts. Let’s start with these additional vehicle diagrams and keep the best one for the last one.

The clear leader in this group of European countries is Italy (9.5% of new vehicle registrations in 2021 are additional vehicle registrations). The strong second category is followed by Spain, Romania, Hungary and Greece, from 7% of additional vehicles in 2021 (Greece and Hungary were the same) to 7.7% (Romania) and 7.8% (Spain). Then you have a large share of 2.8% to 4.2% of the vehicle plug. Then there are Cyprus and Turkey – no comments.

The bar charts above show that, with a few exceptions (especially Estonia and Latvia), these countries have seen a steady increase in EV sales over the last two years, similar to the top 15 countries. . Estonia, Latvia and a few other countries have had subsidy-inspired success years ago that their schemes seem so strange.

These were compounds that consisted of additional components. Not everything is the same if you focus on full electricity (BEV). In relative terms, Italy, Spain and Greece are not doing well here (4.6%, 2.8% and 2.2% BEV respectively). Romania (5.2% of BEV) ranks first in this competition.

The biggest result is that sales of electric cars have grown in all these markets over the last two years, reaching the level of the top 15 a few years ago.
