“The Marked Hour” and the Mexican Fascination with Horror

‘The Marked Hour’ and the fascination of the Mexican public with terror

Isaac Ezban was the first director to join this new version of La Hora Marcada and who, together with a group of experts in the genre, has the challenge of giving new life to the original stories of the series to connect with an audience. eager for stories that surprise them and who – at least in Mexico – has become a great consumer and connoisseur of it.

“The Mexican public is very close to horror, to everything supernatural. Like, we Mexicans really like to explain everything with legends, with myths and things like that. We have this fondness for the occult, for the macabre, the forbidden, the morbid and the supernatural and that is why horror films have good box office,” explains Isaac.

“And I think that the interesting thing that La Hora Marcada is contributing is that it is taking these iconic premises of the eighties series and bringing them to modernity. For example, in my case, I am placing a premise from the eighties in the world of middle schools and high schools with bullying and the addiction of young people to technology and social networks, which give us this false sense of hope. , the world of influencers,” says the director.

Why do Mexicans like horror so much?

Mexico is one of the countries that consumes the most horror films and, as we said, the film Mal de Ojo by Isaac Ezban is one of the most current examples. It was the third highest-grossing film in Mexico in 2022 and the highest-grossing horror film in the country in the last three years.

“I believe that we all have fears and horror movies and series capture those fears; That’s why so many horror movies are about family or children, because we all have that fear that something could happen to a loved one or someone in your family,” explains Isaac.

“In a certain way I think we calm the fears we have about these issues or even the fears we already have more on a collective level, like we can calm them by seeing them captured in other stories.”
