The marginal cost of green hydrogen increases slightly

Bonn (energate) – Last week, it was mainly the decline in solar injection that led to small price increases on the electricity markets in the short term. Spot prices increased by an average of 3 percent. This has also led to an increase in the marginal cost of green hydrogen. Hydex Green stood at a weekly average of 128 euros/MWh (4.27 euros/kg), or 3 euros/MWh (0.09 euro/kg) more than the previous week.

The optimized Hydex 12 Green increased much less, with 0.25 euro/MWh (0.01 euro/kg), and recorded an average value of 96 euro/MWh (3.21 euro/kg) last week. The intraday optimization potential for hydrogen production based on Hydex 12 Green increased by 3 euros/MWh to 32 euros/MWh (1.06 euros/kg).

Gas prices moved sideways due to the good supply situation with very well-filled reservoirs and mild weather forecasts, despite geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Compared to the previous week, spot prices fell slightly by 0.5%. As a result, the marginal costs of conventional hydrogen also remained almost unchanged on a weekly basis. Hydex Gray and Hydex Blue were quoted at 88 euros/MWh (2.93 euros/kg) and 102 euros/MWh (3.39 euros/kg) respectively.

Last week, green hydrogen was less competitive than conventional hydrogen. The “Green-Grey” hyspread increased by 3 euros/MWh (0.11 euros/kg) and was quoted on average at 40 euros/MWh (1.34 euros/kg). Based on Hydex 12 Green, the hyspread remained virtually unchanged at 8 euros/MWh (0.28 euros/kg). /Andreas Gelfort, E-Bridge Consulting

The Hydex Hydrogen Index is cost-based and refers to the short-term cost prices of three different hydrogen production technologies, electrolysis (green), steam reforming, with (blue) and without (gray) storage of CO2. Developed by consultancy firm E-Bridge Consulting, it is published weekly in the energate hydrogen briefing. You will also find the current situation on: www.e-bridge.de
