As every year, Vincenzo Cosenza publishes his maps of social networks and applications most popular in the world. Very visual, it makes it easy to identify which networks and which applications dominate depending on the country. The map is divided into three large blocks: the Orient, the territories of the former USSR and the rest of the world. Unsurprisingly, Facebook still demonstrates its superiority.
Facebook largely dominates, except in Asia
First in 154 of the 167 countries analyzed, Mark Zuckerberg’s social network is the most popular, on nearly 92% of the globe. With 2.7 billion monthly users, and 1.8 billion daily active users, Facebook continued to grow in 2021.
Although this is the only region where it is not in a position of strength, nearly half of the active users of the social network are located in Asia (1.2 billion active per month). Then we find Europe (413 million active per month), then the United States and Canada (255 million active per month). Note that there are still a few rare countries like Iran for example, where Instagram takes the lead.
The former Soviet Union conquered by VKontakte
After months of fierce battle against the other historical Russian social network Odnoklassniki, VKontakte (VK) has become the most used of the countries neighboring Russia: Armenia, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan …
According to Pavel Durov, the founder of VK and Telegram, the Russian network has 400 million registered users, and more than 100 million active per month.
WeChat for China
WeChat, the Chinese social network created by Tencent, brings together no less than 1.2 billion active users per month. It offers very diversified services such as games, messaging, e-commerce, etc. The government application is enjoying growing success, and is widely positioned as a leader for Chinese users.
There are also some surprises in Asia, for example in Japan where Twitter is leading ahead of Facebook.
