If we had to list three iconic actors from romantic comedies in the 90s, surely the name of 74-year-old Richard Gere would be among the first stars that would come to mind. The actor was born in 1949. After leaving the university, he got roles in the theater and then in the cinema in the 70s. In the following decades, Richard captured millions of women’s hearts in romantic films, but he never ceased to impress with his dramatic, serious roles.
IN the rich VOD Video library – part of the EON TV platform, there are three films in which Gere shines with his talent and is a far cry from the image of the prince on the white horse that we usually associate him with. It is in them that he shows his different and unknown face and proves that he can convincingly recreate different and contradictory images.
The many faces of Richard Gere on screen
Not many actors can make the image of a billionaire hedge fund personable, but Gere succeeds in the twisty thriller Arbitrage (2012). His character is a ruthless businessman who is desperate to sell his empire, which is mired in $400 million in debt. The role earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Drama, although the Academy later snubbed him and did not nominate him for an Oscar.
In the drama Time Wasted (2014), Richard Gere once again sheds his pretty-boy image to step into a more complex role. There he plays a mentally ill homeless man who wanders around New York trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter. He befriends another homeless man who claims to have once been a great jazz musician, and this relationship turns out to be vital for both of them.

Another dramatic and tense film is “The Benefactor” (2015). In this film, Richard Gere is once again a charming rich man who feels guilty for the death of his friends and tries to help their daughter as compensation. However, the motives behind his desire to help the young woman may turn out to be even darker than they appear.
And as we enjoy these and many more exciting films from the comfort of our own home thanks to EON’s video library, we can’t help but wonder why Richard Gere stopped starring in blockbusters. The answer may surprise you.
A brave defender of human rights
In recent years, the big roles of Richard Gere in the cinema have become less and less. According to him, there is a political reason for this. His choice to speak out against human rights abuses in China has largely put him on the blacklist of Hollywood companies.
In the 1970s, Geer, who has been a practicing Tibetan Buddhist since his twenties, traveled to Nepal to meet with Tibetan monks. He befriended the Dalai Lama himself. In the following years, the actor spoke out against the Chinese occupation of Tibet. During an acceptance speech for Best Art Director at the 1993 Academy Awards, he publicly condemned China’s “horrible, horrific human rights situation.” His outburst led to a 20-year ban from attending the Oscars. In 2008, he called for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics and publicly demanded that China allow Tibetans independence. His statements also led to a lifetime ban from visiting the country.

Thus, Chinese investors and the huge financial influence of the Asian country in Hollywood became an obstacle for the actor to get a number of film roles. “I’ve been successful enough in the last three decades that I can afford to do smaller movies now,” he told The Hollywood Reporter a few years ago.
In search of love
Richard Gere always manages to surprise us on the screen – both as an actor and as a person, he does not fit into Hollywood stereotypes. His intimate life has always been no less exciting than his impressive career.
Geer has had several relationships with popular ladies over the years, including his marriage to Cindy Crawford from 1991 to 1995. The model later called her marriage to the actor “a great chapter” in her life, explaining that their large age difference caused problems in their relationship. When they got married in Las Vegas, she was 25 and he was 42.
Richard’s second wife is actress Keri Lowell, and their marriage lasted from 2002 to 2016. The couple welcomed their son Homer in February 2000. However, their divorce was quite bitter for the actor. Carey Lowell is demanding $100 million of Geer’s fortune, which at the time was worth about $250 million. The ex-spouses also had a custody battle over their then 15-year-old son. Additionally, according to some reports, Carey refused to leave Geer’s mansion in Bedford, New York. The two eventually settled their divorce, and the details surrounding it have not been made public.
Richard Gere has also been linked to Barbra Streisand, Priscilla Presley and Susan Sarandon.
Finding happiness at 70
In 2018, he married publicist and political activist Alejandra Silva after a 2-year relationship. Previously, people close to Richard claimed that his second divorce made him quite cautious in love. The couple, who have an age difference of 34 years, have a son, Alexander. He was born in February 2019, followed by a second baby boy in April 2020. Geer became a stepfather to Silva’s son Albert. “I’ve found the quiet and happy life I’ve always been looking for,” Geer tells Hola! magazine. in 2018
