The Mandalorian & Grogu: Star Wars TV Series Coming to Big Screen in 2024

Mando’s journey leads to the cinema. After three seasons on Disney+, the television series “The Mandalorian” is coming to the big screen. Lucasfilm has announced the film “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” which will begin production in 2024. The film will be directed by Jon Favreau, who alongside Dave Filoni is one of the creators of these Star Wars characters and worked as a screenwriter, director and producer for the TV series.

The new film will also be produced by Favreau, along with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni. The latter is considered one of the minds behind the new “Star Wars”, which recently played less in the cinema and was mainly shown on television, with series such as “Mandalorian”, “Ahsoka” and “Andor” – if the user opts for streaming subscribed to the Disney+ service.

“The Mandalorian & Grogu” is the first Star Wars film after “Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker”, which was released in 2019. Nine months ago, Lucasfilm had already announced three new films in the Star Wars universe, but the Mando film is not one of them because they deal with different topics and have different directors.

When “The Mandalorian & Grogu” will be released Lucasfilm explained not, but there is speculation about a theatrical release at the end of 2025. Laut Hollywood Reporter Lucasfilm is planning an as-yet-unnamed Star Wars feature for December 19, 2025, and the film about the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda could fit in if production begins as announced this year.

Lucasfilm has not yet revealed anything about the content of the new film. It is also unknown at which point in the timeline of the Star Wars galaxy the action takes place. The TV series was set nine years after the events of Star Wars and five years after Return of the Jedi. It takes place 25 years before the start of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, which begins with “The Force Awakens” (2015).

In the television series, the Mandalorian protagonist Din Djarin, usually just called “The Mandalorian” or “Mando” for short, earns his living as a bounty hunter. One of his tasks is to track down a fifty-year-old who turns out to be a foundling and is of far greater importance than initially suspected. The child is of the same species as the former Jedi Master Yoda and has therefore often been referred to as Baby Yoda, but is named Grogu, as it turns out after a few episodes.

It is still unclear whether the TV series will come to an end with the new film or whether there will be a fourth season of Mandalorian. However, Lucasfilm confirmed that Dave Filoni is currently working on developing the second season of Ahsoka.
