At 02.40 on the night of Saturday 30 October, a serious incident of violence took place in the taxi queue on Stortorget in the center of Tromsø.

A man in his 30s was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. On Sunday, he died of his injuries, the police inform iTromsø.

– We have received confirmation of the death from the man’s assistance lawyer, says police lawyer Christian Hanssen to iTromsø on Sunday.

He has been inside UNN ever since the violence.

The man has been in a coma ever since the incident, and his medical condition has been serious and critical.

The newspaper Nordlys writes that they have been in contact with both the family and the family’s welfare lawyer, who says that the family does not want to say anything about the death at the moment.

– Absolutely awful

The man was standing in a taxi queue on Stortorget in Tromsø when he was beaten down by an 18-year-old man unknown to him.

The accused 18-year-old was arrested by the police shortly after the incident. He was later released.

The 18-year-old’s defender, Anja Hellander, tells iTromsø that she has been in contact with her client and informed him about what has happened.

– He is desperate and takes it very seriously. He thinks it is absolutely awful, she tells the newspaper.

POLICE ATTORNEY: Christian Hanssen says that the police have given high priority to the investigation after the episode of violence.

According to Northern Lights the man has admitted to having beaten, but believes it was in self-defense. He has previously denied criminal guilt for the charge of grievous bodily harm.

The police write in a press release that the charge still stands.

– It’s just sad. This was not a desired goal or desired situation, what happened. My client is characterized by the fact that it has gone as bad as it has done. It is the seriousness and outcome that characterizes him, says Hellander to the newspaper.

Highly prioritized

It has not yet been possible to clarify what was the reason for the incident.

Extensive interrogations have been carried out with the accused perpetrator, as well as with a number of witnesses in the aftermath of the violent incident.

The police have also carried out extensive technical investigations and, among other things, the police have tried to gain access to footage from surveillance cameras in the area in order to bring clarity to what happened.

According to police attorney Hanssen, the investigation has been a high priority in terms of severity.

– We have had as a starting point that this could have been the outcome of the case, he says.

It has previously been known that no weapons were used.

– No relationship has been revealed between the two. Clarifying the reason for the incident is something we hope witnesses can contribute, said operations manager Karl Erik Thomassen to VG in October.
