The man who hid his mother’s death to continue receiving his pension spoke to Bulgaria ON AIR. For 10 months, 49-year-old Cvetelin didn’t tell anyone his mother was dead. His goal was to continue receiving his pension, which was around BGN 500.
They were the first to suspect that something was wrong in the nearby shop where the man bought diapers for his sick mother.
“What do I have to do to collect the pension? I have no income, we were living on a pension,” said his son, Tsvetelin Dimitrov.
Cvetelin was unemployed and was taking care of his mother, who had been bedridden for several years. From the nearby shop, he shopped with his credit card, which was used to transfer his pension. The shop assistants were the first to suspect that something was wrong.
“Several people had gathered in the neighborhood shop and were commenting. I came in by chance and they told me that since he was shopping for supplies, it was for diapers,” said the mayor of the village of Manastirishte, Atanas Atanasov.
So that no one doubts, Cvetelin continued to carry out her daily duties.
“I have been fighting alone for 5 years. And if I’m sorry, I can have my mother back,” Tsvetelin Dimitrov stressed.
In the house where he took care of his mother, there was no electricity or water for a long time, and the neighbors say they often helped him.
“He’s a drunkard. Today at least half a kilo of brandy. He has no electricity, no water. He asked me for money and I gave him a lot, oil and what not,” said neighbor Ivan Borisov.
People in Manastirishte village are shocked by what happened.
Police interrogations were conducted, but Tsvetan has now been released.
An autopsy of the body revealed that the elderly woman had died in January. No signs of violence. The woman’s death certificate will be issued.
