“The man who fixes women”: Denis Mukwege at a conference in Strasbourg – Evangeliques.info

Congolese minister Denis Mukwege, gynecological surgeon and human rights activist, will visit Strasbourg on October 19. At this time, he will give a public speech at the university on the topic “Peace and human rights today, is it possible?” The maximum capacity of the amphitheater has been reached, registrations to attend are closed. The documentary “The Man Who Repairs Women” – a term that Denis Mukwege, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize 2018, is often mentioned – will be shown in the morning.

In addition, an information session is also being planned on the prevention and recovery of extraordinary events in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for several decades, states a note from Inter Développement et Solidarités (IDS). The Alsatian NGO is carrying out the project in collaboration with the University of Strasbourg and local authorities.

A doctor hired after a brush with death

In the 1990s, Denis Mukwege, after coming close to death in a hospital massacre of which he was the director, founded the Panzi hospital in Bukavu, in the eastern part of the country. An area where gang rape is used as a weapon of war. He is against cases of extremely violent rape and female genital mutilation. He then specializes in the medical care of women who suffer.

IDS has been a partner of the Panzi Foundation and the hospital of the same name since 2016. Therefore, it actively supports projects related to the establishment, medical and administrative teams and scholarships, but also other humanitarian aid activities for the most vulnerable in the region.
