Klaus Schormann was elected President of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1984. It is interesting that in the GDR this sport was practically non-existent at the time, because it was banned by Sports Minister Manfred Ewald in the early 1970s. For good reason, it was not worthwhile to support sports where there is little to gain. Meanwhile, a maximum of two Olympic medals could be won: in addition to the one, medals were awarded in team competitions. Schormann’s career began very quickly. By the time of the World Cup in Budapest in 1989, he had arrived as the information vice-president of the international federation.

He recognized that UIPMB chairman Igor Novikov (who had won Olympic championship gold in 1956 and 1964 in his team) did not speak any language other than Russian. it wasn’t popular in sports. He failed in 1993 and lost the battle for his presidency for being barely voted on. The winner, the new president, was Klaus Schormann from Germany.
