The 60-year-old American, who five years ago bought a drawing for $ 30 (less than 700 crowns), was very lucky. It was to be a copy of the work of the Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer. However, the opposite was true and experts have proven that it is an original worth millions.
The line drawing called The Virgin Mary and Santa Claus with a flower on a grassy bench was owned by the American architect Jean-Paul Carlhian. However, he died in 2012 and three years later his wife also died. Therefore, in 2016, the heirs organized a sale of their belongings, where, among other things, this work also appeared.
The family believed it was a copy of a drawing by artist Albrecht Dürer, the portal said The Indian Express. The new owner, who bought the work for $ 30, then had it judged by experts. They finally came to a very surprising conclusion.
“When I saw the drawing, it was unbelievable. There was either a very compelling copy or a masterpiece in front of me,” said Clifford Schorer, a partner at Agnews Gallery in London.
Experts eventually agreed that the line drawing was genuine. Its price could climb to $ 50 million (more than one billion crowns) in a subsequent auction.
According to foreign media, Schorer was to enter into a sales agreement with the owner of the work and pay him an unspecified amount in advance. It is estimated that the American who came across the work could be financially secure for the rest of his life.
