A 23-year-old man from Etten-Leur was injured in a police chase in Breda on Thursday night. The driver ignored a stop sign given to him around 2am by an officer who was driving an anonymous police car. He ran away. The driver crashed into the Rithsestraat and the car caught fire. According to the police, this man regularly gets behind the wheel drunk and without a license.
The police officer saw the man’s luxury car around a quarter past twelve on the Ginnekenmarkt. He knew there was a man driving there whose license had been taken away. That man is also regularly drunk behind the wheel.
When he saw the car drive away, the officer decided to chase it and give the driver a stop sign. However, the motorist escaped at high speed and a chase ensued. “He went through the city at very high speeds. The police car only managed to keep up with him,” police said.
The co-pilot got out
During the pursuit, the driver stopped briefly to drop a co-driver. Officers briefly approached this co-pilot, but according to the police he is not a suspect.
Then things went wrong on the Rithsestraat. There, the driver took the corner too fast, causing him to crash into a fence and a tree. The officer made an emergency stop and, once he reached the car, saw that the driver was indeed the man he expected. At the same time, the car caught fire. The firefighters intervened to put out the burning car. The car was taken away for further investigation.
Hospital
The driver was arrested and checked by the doctors. He sustained back injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance.
The man is suspected of driving without a license, ignoring a stop sign, dangerous driving and drunk driving. He also refused to take a breathalyser test. After the interrogation, the suspect was released that same night.
Great damage
At the point where the chase ended, the damage is still heavy on Friday morning. The fence is badly damaged and the ground and some trees are blackened.
According to local residents, the piece of woodland belongs to someone from Etten-Leur, who recreates it. It is not inhabited.
Also chase to Eindhoven
A motorist also crashed a few hours ago in Eindhoven. He too was chased by the police. This driver hit a house with his car in an attempt to escape the police. The facade of this house needs to be reinforced.
