The male fight for the Oscar

One of the most important categories of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is Best Actor. It recognizes outstanding performances, and five actors who stood out for their roles in 2021 and compete for the coveted statuette at the 94th edition of the Oscars.

The nominated actors are: Andrew Garfield as Jonathan Larson, a musical writer; Will Smith as Richard Williams, the father of tennis players Serena and Venus Williams; Denzel Washington as Macbeth, the title character in a Tragedy by William Shakespeare; Javier Bardem as Desi Arnaz, a Cuban actor and musician; and Benedict Cumberbatch as Phil Burbank, a ruthless rancher.

If awards season leads the way, there’s one actor who has it all going for him. Smith might finally get it. In a project that he has defined as very personal, the story of overcoming two great American athletes guided and inspired by his father. His performance has already won him the Golden Globe, the Critics Choice, the SAG and the BAFTA for Best Actor.

Who will win?

Three actors could get the Oscar for the first time: Cumberbatch, Smith and Garfield, all have been nominated but only Washington and Bardem have won it. He won the first in 2002 as a leading actor in “Training Day” and as a Supporting Actor in 1990 for “Glory”. While in 2007, Bardem won Best Supporting Actor for his role in “No Country for Old Men.”

For her role as Desi Arnaz in “Being the Ricardos”

Outstanding roles: In 2006 he starred in “Love in the time of cholera”. In 2008 he became the first Spanish actor to win an Oscar for his performance as Anton Chigurh, a hit man, in “No Country for Old Men”. Then in 2010, he starred in “Biutiful”, where he plays Uxbal, a terminally ill man. In 2012 he transforms into Silva, the main villain of James Bond in “Skyfall”.
Points in its favor: The characterization and Cuban accent that offers a convincing interpretation.

2. Benedict Cumberbatch
For his role as Phil Burbank in “The Power of the Dog”
Age: 45 years
Place of birth: Hammersmith, London, England
Second Oscar nomination
Featured roles: He became known in 2010 as the famous detective Sherlock Holmes in a modern adaptation of the character of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in the series “Sherlock” between 2010-2017. In 2015, he received his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor, for his role as scientist Alan Turing, in the biopic “The Enigma Code”. In 2016 he entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange.
Points in its favor: “The power of the dog” is the most nominated and reaches the Oscars fighting 12 categories.

3. Andrew Garfield
For his role as Jonathan Larson in “Tick, tick… Boom!”
Age: 38 years
Place of birth: Los Angeles, California, United States

Featured Roles: It was his portrayal of Eduardo Saverin on “The social network” in 2010 that launched him to fame. Then he became the second actor to bring the arachnid superhero to life, he played Peter Parker and Spider-Man in 2012 and 2016, he put on the suit again for 2021. Another of his memorable roles is in the film “Until the Last Man” 2016, as Army Corporal Desmond Doss, for which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor.
Points in her favor: In this musical she shows all her talent with her voice and dance.

4. Will Smith
For his role as Richard Williams in “King Richard”
Age: 53 years
Place of birth: Philadelphia Pennsylvania, United States
Third Oscar nomination
Featured Roles: Although he is considered a great actor, he has never won an Oscar. He started starring in the 90’s series, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and although he had a stint in music, his court was the big screen. In 1996 he played Captain Steven Hiller in “Independence Day”, by 2006 he starred in “The Pursuit of Happyness” as Chris Gardner and has made movies about dramas, romantic comedies and science fiction.
Points in its favor: Inspirational biographical papers are a favorite at the Academy.

5. Denzel Washington
For his role as Macbeth in “The Tragedy of Macbeth”
Age: 67 years
Place of birth: Mount Vernon, New York,
United States
9th Oscar nomination
Notable Roles: Has played many biographical roles, including South African activist Steve Biko in 1987’s “Cry for Freedom”; human rights defender Malcolm X, in 1992’s “Malcolm X” and drug trafficker Frank Lucas in 2007’s “American Gangster”. He has almost 50 years of experience and has made more than thirty films, where the action and drama genres stand out.
Points in his favor: His experience in the cinema condenses his performance as Macbeth.
