The Making of God of War 2: Inside Look at the Complexity of Game Development

A short excerpt from a God of War 2 video diary that surfaced on X last week reminded gamers just how difficult game development can be, with just a few minutes of “gameplay” having to keep multiple people busy and tens of hours spent.

User X KaptainKuba reposted An excerpt from the documentary “The Making of God of War 2”, showing a slightly embellished version of how Sony Santa Monica studio created its epic action sequel. The video very briefly shows how the team worked on a seemingly ordinary moment where Kratos shakes and breaks a stone column.

Director Corey Barlog talks about everything that goes into creating an interactive segment like this.

This sequence alone involves the level designers, since they are the ones creating the space in which it happens. They also model the column.

Animators must wait until this column is created. Then you need to add effects. Then the combat designer has to build it in and bind it to the buttons. Then the sound engineer must add sounds. If some special code is needed—that is, a tool that must be written for it to work—the programmers must be notified as early as possible.

According to Barlog, almost every department is involved in the development process of the segment, which in total amounts to “just a minute of gameplay.”

This sounds quite complicated, but it is worth noting that since then the scale of the games in the series has only grown. It’s no surprise that AAA game development today requires hundreds of people.
