The Making of David Chipperfield’s Kunsthaus Zürich: From Concept to Completion

David Chipperfield’s new building for the Kunsthaus Zürich now stands in all its splendor and size on Zurich’s Heimplatz opposite Karl Moser’s museum building and will open in October 2021. The expansion of the Kunsthaus to become the largest art museum in Switzerland has thus become a reality.

After the two volumes on the history of the building and on the concept of the new Kunsthaus as a museum for the 21st century, this book looks at the development of the new building from the architectural competition through the political debates on the construction project to the completed house. It contains a text by Christoph Felger, the executive architect at David Chipperfield Architects Berlin, who explains the idea behind the design, the promise it made and how it is kept. There will also be a detailed discussion moderated by the architecture critic Sabine von Fischer between Christoph Felger, Wiebke Rösler, the director of the Zurich City Office for Buildings, and the museum director Christoph Becker. Numerous illustrations and plans as well as a foreword by David Chipperfield complete the volume.
