The majority of cases of HIV/AIDS in children are experienced by toddlers aged 4 years and under

TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA – HIV/AIDS cases in Indonesia for the period 2001-2021 were dominated by the age group

This was conveyed by the Coordinator of the Substance of HIV AIDS and PIMS of the Ministry of Health dr. Ratna Budi Hapsari, MKM., in a virtual activity, Tuesday (21/9/2021).

“That children aged 4 years and under are more dominant than this group of children.
Then boys are more exposed to HIV than girls, “said Ratna.

Total number HIV / AIDS case in children aged 14 years and under as many as 12,916 cases.

The proportion of children aged 4 years and under is more likely to suffer from HIV/AIDS than those aged 5-14 years, which is an alarm for the government.

“It must get the attention of all parties. That children under 4 years old and certainly not because of their behavior get HIV/AIDS but from the people who are closest to them or their environment such as their biological parents,” he said.

He explained, the 2018 data showed 988 children aged infected with HIV and 459 children aged > 4 years.

Then in 2019 showed 910 children aged 4 years.

In 2020 showed 617 children aged infected with HIV and 337 children aged > 4 years.

Meanwhile, the latest data, namely January – June 2021, showed that 242 children were infected with HIV and 135 children aged >4 years.

“This is not a small number for children but talking about investment in human resources, not just numbers, this is very concerning,” he said.

Of the thousands of detected cases of HIV in children, only 4,739 children aged 14 years and under have access to ART treatment.
