After participating in the masses organized in the cathedral and in the afternoon procession, they will take center stage to symbolically end this day, offering a musical moment at 9 p.m. About twenty choristers, mostly adults, will perform major works from the repertoire of sacred music, notably dedicated to Mary, composed by Mozart, Bach and Vivaldi, and Gregorian hymns.

Led by Nicolas Lhoste, the Maîtrise of Chartres Cathedral has weathered the health crisis by managing to keep a minimum of activities, but not without difficulty. “We were able to rehearse in small groups, wearing the mask,” says Hélène de la Kethulle, president of the Association of the Maîtrise de la Cathédrale de Chartres. “We have also adapted the rehearsal slots according to the curfews. “
If the thirty or so adult choristers held out during the Covid epidemic, even continuing to learn new musical works at home, the ranks of the children became thinner. Of the thirty or so little singers recruited in September 2020, there are only four or five who have not given up during the year.

“We are going to launch a recruitment campaign as soon as the school year begins. We will be present at the chartres association fair, on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 September except Sunday morning. Children – like adults – who would like to join the Maîtrise will be subjected to a musical audition and will be able to participate in two or three rehearsals, before committing to the year. These weekly rehearsals take place on Wednesdays, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., for children; and from 7 to 9 p.m., for adolescents and adults.
Concerts from the start of the school year
The choristers must also be available, on Sunday morning, to animate the 11 am mass but also to rehearse in the cathedral, from 9:30 am. Nicolas Lhoste underlines:
“It is preferable to know notions of music theory to achieve mastery, but the most important is to have a musical ear and motivation. We are at the service of the cathedral, but our choir is open to all. We aim to share our faith while respecting each other’s convictions. “

The Maîtrise de la Cathédrale de Chartres already has a busy schedule for the start of the 2021-2022 season. After a back-to-school day in Orléans (Loiret), Sunday September 19, the choir will sing in Néron, October 2, to help the association for the preservation of the church; then the weekend of October 9 and 10, in Chartres, for the 30 years of Radio Grand Ciel. It will then be necessary to prepare the Christmas concert, unavoidable.
