On the same model as Clairefontaine (Yvelines), for football, or Marcoussis (Essonne), for rugby, house of handball was created in 2018, at Creteil (Val-de-Marne), to provide an excellent training ground for its French team. The latter previously trained in Capbreton, in the Landes, “but it was not geographically central enough, and, with our own place, we benefit from more equipment, as well as our own hotel and catering”, describes Matthieu Locquet, sales director at the Maison du handball.

No favoritism for the French team at the Paris Olympics

In the corridors, the showcases display the trophies. The gold medal of the last Olympics, in Tokyo, catches the eye. The Maison du handball is one of the places chosen to serve as preparation centers for the Paris Games in 2024. But don’t expect to see the French team there. “It’s considered favouritism,” explains Matthieu Locquet. She will only come for a preparation camp in May-June, especially since the majority of handball matches will take place in Lille. »

As for the July-August 2024 period, everything is still possible. “We rather have an interest in not welcoming our competitors in handball, unless it is to support small teams, underlines Matthieu Locquet. We can adapt the rooms for combat sports, for example, by laying carpet tiles, the place is very flexible. The choice will also be made according to the conditions issued by the delegations: “If a team wants to impose its cooks on us, it will not be possible, because we have our own catering team on site all year round. »

Foreign delegations seduced

Apart from being a training center for the French team, the Maison du handball welcomes other athletes and events to make the most of its space. “We have just welcomed the American team of para-athletes”, illustrates the sales director.

medical center, massage roomsof bodybuilding, auditorium…. The 14,000 m2 space is already being expanded to add handball courts and a beach volleyball court. The Maison du handball also offers a accommodation on site, with 72 double rooms. Partnerships have been established with hotels located nearby to expand this offer. “The athletes will be in the Olympic Village during the Games, but we will surely welcome families and members of the staff”, anticipates Matthieu Locquet.

The House of Handball will vibrate throughout the summer of 2024 to the rhythm of the Games, with in particular the passage of the olympic flamescheduled for July 21, 2024.
