Thrombosis has occurred in six of the more than 6.8 million people who have received the J&J vaccine in the United States.
In all cases, they were women between the ages of 18 and 48. They developed blood clots six to 13 days after receiving the vaccine, the CDC and FDA said.
“The CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Council on Immunization Practices on Wednesday to review these cases and assess their potential significance,” the statement, issued jointly by the two agencies, said.
“The FDA will review this analysis as it also investigates these cases. Until this process is complete, we recommend that you discontinue the use of this vaccine as a precaution,” the statement said.
