Over the next few years, the canton of Bern plans to remedy several structural defects in the main building of the University of Bern for around 8.7 million francs. Lecture halls and the cafeteria are also to be adapted to current requirements.
For example, the canton of Bern wants to redesign the entrances to the cafeteria so that the rooms can also be used for learning outside of opening hours. This relieves the burden on libraries and group rooms, as the cantonal building and traffic department (BVD) announced last week.
The canton of Bern also wants to improve fire protection, install fall protection and ensure freedom from obstacles. The BVD media office announced this on request. In addition, the furnishing of the lecture halls and the technical equipment are to be brought up to date.
The Bern cantonal government has approved a loan of 700,000 francs for the planning and tendering of these repairs and operational adjustments. The amount of 8.7 million francs is an estimate. Work is scheduled to begin in summer 2023.
Second renovation loan
Almost two years ago, the Bernese Grand Council approved a loan for the renovation of the main building of the University of Bern. At that time it was about 5.5 million francs.
As the BVD media office said on request, this money is used to renovate the building envelope. This construction work will continue until 2023. The west facade, which is particularly exposed to the weather, and the staircase glazing on the north facade were repaired as an immediate measure in 2017.
