The session will raise the issue of combating the pandemic, climate change and providing the world with food.
Starting on Tuesday, September 14, in New York, the 76th session of the UN General Assembly will discuss, in particular, the problems of combating the pandemic and climate change. Also, attention will be paid to “food systems” and energy, according to Ukrinform.
The current session “will be very different from the fully virtual meetings of 2020,” the UN press service said.
“The 76th UN General Assembly, as before, will be overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic, but this will not prevent the leaders (some of them will be in the Assembly Hall) to address pressing global problems,” the press release said.
It is noted that the format of the General Assembly session this year reflects the current situation in the world: a gradual return to face-to-face meetings and preservation of work online. On September 20, some of the heads of state will arrive at the UN headquarters to take part in the debates, but “the majority will stay at home and will transmit their messages by video.”
“One of the most valuable aspects of the UN General Assembly for heads of state and other officials is the opportunity to hold informal one-on-one meetings with colleagues away from prying eyes,” the statement said. However, it is not yet known which of the leaders will arrive in person.
The session will raise the issue of combating the pandemic, in particular, the support of the “rich” countries for the “poorer” ones. And also – the creation of new food systems, “which means everything related to the delivery of healthy and nutritious food – from crops to meat”, the problem of the climate crisis, the use of fossil fuels and renewable energy sources.
Within the framework of these themes, the first UN Summit on Food Systems, initiated by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, will take place on 23 September. On the same day, a special debate on climate and security issues is expected in the Security Council. A high-level energy dialogue is scheduled for September 24.
Popular Korean group BTS will perform at the UN on September 20, which could create a lot of traffic on the network due to the large number of visitors. Therefore, “the UN IT team will undoubtedly be in tension,” the press service notes.
We will remind, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine previously reported that UN will consider the situation in Donbass… This decision is made by the majority of the members of the organization.
