The hearing of the main suspect in the fire in front of the synagogue of La Grande-Motte, in Hérault, was able to be briefly heard on Sunday evening, August 25, at the hospital, due to his state of health, France Inter learned from a source close to the case. The state of health of this 33-year-old man, of Algerian nationality, in a regular situation, was deemed compatible with being heard. The suspect was already in police custody.

The man was injured during his arrest the day before. He was arrested during an intervention led by the RAID and the intervention brigades (BRI) of Marseille and Montpellier, in a tower in the sensitive district of Pissevin in Nîmes, Saturday August 24 at 11:35 p.m. Before the intervention of the police, he opened fire on the intervention column, which returned fire. The suspect was hit by several shots but his life is not in danger.

After starting several fires in front of the synagogue in La Grande-Motte on Saturday morning, this man was spotted on a video surveillance camera as he fled. According to the images, certified to franceinfo by a source close to the investigation, he was wearing a Palestinian flag tied around his waist and a keffiyeh on his head. His face was not hidden, which probably allowed investigators to identify him very quickly. Three other people from his entourage were taken into custody.
