The Main Road: Together for the Constitution – CGIL and Associations March in Rome

“We don’t give numbers, count on us”: this is how he replies the general secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, arriving in Piazza San Giovanni to those who ask him how many people are taking part in the demonstration organized together with the associations in Rome, with two processions.

The participants in the branch’s CGIL procession that started from Piazza della Repubblica chanted ‘Bella Ciao’ in chorus, lighting red smoke bombs. The loudest voices are raised behind the Fiom banner, when the demonstration has now reached Piazza Vittorio. Along with the flags of the union also those of the Anpi. “Let’s clarify the situation, hands off the Constitution” was the slogan chanted by the participants.

The secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, joined the choir which, during the CGIL procession in Rome, sang Bella ciao. Schlein, who is participating in the demonstration with a PD delegation, then finished by applauding.

“We are very happy to participate in the CGIL demonstration today in Rome, it will be a nice day of participation, on public health, on wages. We will be there as the Democratic Party to give our support”. She had said it Elly Schlein on the sidelines of an initiative in Empoli (Florence) on “Rights and not privileges. The next challenges to face for the inclusion of disabilities”, the first event of the inclusion department of the Democratic Party.

“This is a government that does not believe in local healthcare and is taking away funds from community homes. We will fight because they are dismantling local healthcare, but rather local healthcare and the healthcare of the future. We are fighting for universal and territorial healthcare. We will be in the streets today with the CGIL for this too. And we will also be there for the minimum wage, because below 9 euros is exploitation. For all these battles, without exception, we will see you in the streets on November 11th in Rome” said Schlein.

“The Movement is present at the CGIL demonstration with an important delegation and I am here to reiterate the difficulties of the country, of the Italians, not only of the vulnerable groups, also of the middle class, here in Foggia in this market with high prices, the expensive fuel which is also reflected in the cost of food, and the expensive mortgages.” Thus the leader of the M5s Giuseppe Conte in Foggia for an electoral tour which this morning touched the Rosati market in Foggia. “We are here – he added – to talk to people, to note the difficulties. This government doesn’t realize it. It makes budget maneuvers that give no prospect of growth, no prospect of intervention to remedy the difficulties of families” .

CGIL video, the voices from the march in Rome: ‘Here to defend the Constitution, no more precarious work’

“The message that we want to send with the main road is that those fundamental rights enshrined in our Constitution must be implemented and therefore we are against any idea of modifying the Constitution: for this reason we ask the government to change the economic and social policies and also to institutional reform”. Thus the general secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, from the procession of the demonstration with the associations “The main road, together for the Constitution”, adding: “Listen to us”. This “is a great demonstration. Today’s message is to unite this country and ask that the world of work, which keeps the country on its feet, is put in a position to discuss and define the future by making the reforms that are needed , starting from a job that is not precarious, from a tax reform worthy of the name and above all by implementing the Constitution”, he remarks.

“We will continue on this path until we have obtained answers” considering if necessary “all the tools the union has at its disposal”. Thus the general secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, responds from the march by returning to “not ruling out anything”, not even a general strike. But, he adds, “I also want to discuss with the other trade union organizations and verify the condition of making decisions together”.

The national demonstration is underway in Rome organized by the CGIL and more than one hundred secular and Catholic associations, under the slogan “The main road, together for the Constitution”.
Two marches are planned in which, according to the organizers’ forecasts, at least 100 thousand people should participate.
They start from Piazza della Repubblica and Piazzale dei Partigiani to converge in Piazza San Giovanni where there will be a succession of interventions from the stage of some of the promoting associations and the conclusions of the leader of the CGIL.
Expected in the square are the secretary of the Democratic Party Elly Schlein, a delegation of the M5s (President Giuseppe Conte will not be there, busy in Foggia for a series of initiatives), the co-spokesperson of Green Europe Angelo Bonelli and the leader of the Italian Left Nicola Fratoianni . Action, IV and More Europe will be missing.
There are eight ‘stages’ of the main road in the poster that accompanies the event: starting from work, passing through peace, health, democracy, environment, wages, education up to rights. The watchword, defend and implement the Constitution. We will therefore march through the streets of the capital for work, against precariousness, for the fight against poverty, against all wars and for peace, for the increase in wages and pensions, for healthcare and public schools , for the protection of the environment, for the defense and implementation of the Constitution against differentiated autonomy and the distortion of the parliamentary Republic.
Among the speeches expected on stage, the representatives of the environmentalist associations, of Europe for peace, the president of the Acli Emiliano Manfredonia, of the Anpi Gianfranco Pagliarulo, the mayor of Pesaro and president of Ali (League of local autonomies) Matteo Ricci, the students and also Rosy Bindi, Don Ciotti and Gustavo Zagrebelsky.

Landini: “We condemn the Hamas attacks, no to war”

“We explicitly condemn what Hamas did against the Israeli people, we reiterate our opposition to any form of war. I take this opportunity to express my closeness and condolences to the families of the victims of this attack”. Thus the general secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, from the demonstration procession with the associations, including pacifist ones, in Rome. “And since we continue to think that peace must be built, we believe that it is necessary to develop negotiations and that the entire international community also addresses the issue that concerns two peoples, two states, the freedom of the Palestinian people and autonomy”, continues Landini underlining the no to any war and the “logic that war should once again become the instrument that regulates relations between states and nations. This too will have a voice today and is one of the reasons why we are in the streets as we did on November 5th against any war”.

Puppet and banners against Meloni

A foam rubber Giorgia Meloni with a grim look and a long forked tongue: the puppet against the Prime Minister is parading at the CGIL procession in the branch that started from Piazza della Repubblica. The puppet has a sign around his neck: “Cuts to healthcare, tax amnesties, crumbs for the poor”. Then there is a banner of the Electricians of Ascoli where Meloni is depicted with a long Pinocchio-like nose, and next to her she has a pack of ‘Balilla’ pasta, the ‘ribbed truncheons’. The banner of the CGIL Emilia Romagna is also critical of the government: ‘Promises in the mud’ in reference to the post-flood delays.
