The Main Reasons Why Cucumbers Grow Bitter: Insights from a Gardening Expert

Author of the Ukrainian YouTube channel about gardening and gardening “Life bentezhne” called the main reasons why cucumbers grow bitter.

According to the expert, bitterness in cucumbers is provoked by the presence of cucurbitacin in them, a substance that is formed naturally in fruits.

“The more we violate the rules for growing cucumbers, the more cucurbitacin accumulates in them,” the expert explained. “The only consolation is that this substance is not dangerous or toxic for us. Cucurbitacin is good for our body.”

The author of the video said that cucumbers produce cucurbitacin as a defense against pest destruction.

“If a whitefly, a tick attacks a cucumber, bitterness appears in it,” the expert emphasized.

To get rid of bitterness, she also recommended picking cucumbers when they were not yet large. In this case, the expert explained, they will not have time to accumulate a critical amount of a substance that will give bitterness to the fruits.

The author of the video added that there are varieties of cucumbers in which the formation of this substance has been eliminated genetically.

To provide cucumbers with the nutrients they need to grow, experts also recommend making milk supplements. To prepare top dressing, 1 liter of ordinary store-bought milk is dissolved in 10 liters of warm water.

“Milk is a complex of nutrients that are equally useful for both humans and plants. Especially for cucumbers. Milk makes the soil more fertile. Lactic bacteria settle in it, which prevent the appearance of fungi,” the experts noted.

If the leaves turn yellow on cucumbers in summer, this indicates a lack of nutrition. In this case, cucumbers need to be fed with potassium humate.
