1. Kidney disease
Kidney disease in diabetics is usually called diabetic nephropathy.
Statistically, about 40% of people with diabetes develop nephropathy. But it can be prevented or delayed through control of blood glucose levels and blood pressure.
How can this condition occur? Diabetes affect the body’s arteries and because the kidneys filter blood from many arteries, kidney problems are a particular risk for people with diabetes.
Symptoms of Kidney Disease
Symptoms of diabetic nephropathy tend to become apparent once the condition reaches a later stage. Usually the following symptoms may start to be noticed around stage four of their development:
- Swelling of the ankles, feet, lower legs or hands caused by water retention
- Darker urine, caused by blood in the urine
- Shortness of breath, when climbing stairs for example
- Fatigue due to lack of oxygen in the blood
- Nausea or vomiting
To help identify nephropathy early, diabetics should be screened for kidney complications at least once a year. A screening test involves a simple urine sample that is tested to detect whether there is protein in the urine.

2. Nerve damage
Neuropathy (or diffuse neuropathy) is a neurological disorder that can be categorized as sensory neuropathy, motor neuropathy, or autonomic neuropathy.
