China’s highest political advisory body began its annual session in Beijing on Monday, an event prior to the inauguration on Tuesday of the National People’s Congress (NPA, Legislative), the most important political event of the year in the country, known as the ” Two Sessions.
Chinese President and General Secretary of the Communist Party (CPC) Xi Jinping attended the inaugural meeting of the so-called Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), an advisory body composed of delegates from various organizations, at the Great Hall of the People from the Chinese capital. Wang Huning, one of Xi’s closest allies and considered one of the regime’s ideologues, debuted as president of this advisory body, a position he accepted last year.
National People’s Assembly
The other key meeting is the annual session of China’s National People’s Congress (NPC), the Chinese Parliament, which will take place from Tuesday, March 5 to Monday, March 11. Liu Jieyi, spokesperson for the CCPPC, announced on Sunday that the economy and unemployment will be at the center of the meetings.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, Prime Minister Li Qiang will announce the growth forecasts of the world’s second economy for 2024 after having grown by 5.2% in 2023, meeting the official objective set by the authorities. The ANP will also address other key issues such as the Defense budget and an amendment to the state secrets law.
Press conference canceled
Premier Li Qiang will not hold his meeting with the press at the end of the week, announced the spokesperson of the National People’s Congress, Lou Qinjian. In previous years, the press conference was always a rare opportunity for the prime minister to answer questions from journalists. The press conference will also not take place in the next few years, unless there are special circumstances, Lou said.
However, he added that journalists will have other opportunities to ask questions of ministers and senior government officials. It is expected that, as in previous years, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will hold a press conference during the ANP session.
