The Main Gate of the Arsenal: A Symbol of Cartagena’s History and Architecture

Built between 1750 and 1760, it is one of the main symbols of the city

CARTAGENA (MURCIA), 3 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Last September, the adaptation and improvement work on the Main Gate of the Arsenal was completed, which has included the placement of different commemorative inscriptions to highlight this architectural work that is a living reflection of the history of Cartagena, especially at the time. of the illustration, as reported by Navy sources in a statement.

Specifically, two new inscriptions have been placed, one inside the Arsenal, with an article from the Royal Ordinances (RROO) for the Navy, on military uses and customs, and another, to the right of the Main Door with some letters labeled in the original Latin and its translation, which was the one that King Ferdinand VI ordered to be installed in 1750 to enhance the Arsenal.

The inscription with the article of the RROO of the Armed Forces has the following text: “Correctness in the greeting and uniformity, due treatment and courtesy in relations between the military constitute testimony of mutual respect and military training, that must be practiced and exacted.”

The inscription with the text from 1750 states the following: “By order and generosity of the Catholic King of Spain Ferdinand VI, the once very famous port, but very deteriorated by the passage of time, has been restored, new works carried out, and also built this arsenal very splendor to restore a safer position to vessels of public interest, due to the greatness of the Kingdom. Year of the lord of 1750”.

This new inscription joins the verses of Calderón de la Barca, an extract from his poem, The Spanish Soldier of the Tercios, which are a compendium of virtues, rights and duties of the soldier, written with the brilliance typical of the 17th century .

The construction of the Arsenal, commissioned to the military engineer Sebastián Feringán, which spanned from 1731 to 1782, under the reign of Philip V, Ferdinand VI and ending with Charles III on the throne of Spain, had the order to build a Main Gate in the place with the best view. This gate did not have the current tower, topped by its clock, until the second half of the 19th century.
