the Maif and Smacl mutuals are getting closer

After the association of Macif and Aesio in early 2021 to create Aéma, it is the turn of two other mutuals to announce their merger this Monday, September 27: the Maif and the Smacl will create a joint insurance company.

The Maif is the 6th largest automobile insurer, the 1st in the associative sector. With this merger, the group “increases its diversification”. The objective of the mutual, which employs 2,500 people at the head office in Niort, is to “to become the leading insurer for local authorities and associations as well as a growing player in the business and social economy markets”, can we read in the press release announcing the merger with Smacl.

The Smacl it supports the risks of nearly 18,000 communities and public establishments and around 70,000 associations and companies. It has 850 employees, almost all of them in Niort. The creation of this insurance company will enable it to “benefit from the support of a benchmark player in the association market with enhanced solvency, increased financial products and optimized reinsurance costs”. The Smacl which was in difficulty in recent years. “We were at a stage where there was no other alternative. It is a lifeline.”, estimates David Pinaud, of the CGT.

“All jobs will be made permanent”

The Smacl and the Maif assure in their joint statement that “all the jobs will be perpetuated within the SA”. The new entity, Smacl assurances SA, will be operational at January 1, 2022, subject to the favorable opinion of the supervisory authorities.

The function of chairman of Smacl assurances SA will be entrusted Jean-Luc de Boissieu, currently president of Smacl, to that of general manager at Patrick Blanchard, Managing Director of Altima Assurances, a subsidiary of the Maif group.
