Built for two years, the Nurul Iman Palace was completed on January 1, 1984 or to coincide with the Independence Day of Brunei Darussalam from the UK.
The location of this palace is located on the banks of the Brunei River which is only a few kilometers away from the capital of Brunei Darussalam, Bandar Seri Begawan.
Nurul Iman has held the title of the world’s largest palace in the Guinness World Records.
This palace is the official residence of the family of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah which covers an area of 200,000 square meters and has 1,788 rooms.
In fact, the size of the Palace of Nurul Iman beats Buckingham Palace in England and Versailles Palace in France.
The two palaces have an area of 77,000 square meters and 87,728 square meters, respectively.
Citing the official page Guiness World Records, The Nurul Iman Palace also has 257 bathrooms, and a banquet hall for 5,000 guests.

Furthermore, there is a garage with a capacity of 110 cars, an air-conditioned stable with a capacity of 200 horses, and five swimming pools.
Not only the palace building is spacious, the mosque in its area can accommodate up to 1,500 people and has a helipad.
The exterior of the building was designed by Filipino architect Leandro V Locsin and the interior by the British architect who also designed the Burj Al-Arab, Khuan Chew.
Meanwhile, the implementation of the construction of Istana Nurul Iman was carried out by Ayala Corporation.
In designing the exterior of the palace, Leandro tried to incorporate Brunei’s Islamic and Malay architectural traditions.
Meanwhile, the architecture of the sultan’s residence is a blend of traditional European and Malay architecture.

Gold and marble are the main decoration materials for the Nurul Iman Palace, 38 different types of marble are used for interior decoration. In fact, there are 44 stairs made of marble.
