The Magicians: Unsuccessful Sequel Idea Born in the 90s

The idea for a sequel was born in the 90s.

More than 40 years ago, the musical comedy “The Magicians” was released and became a cult classic of New Year’s television. The film was based on a script by the Strugatsky brothers, but only a few details were taken from the book “Monday Begins on Saturday.” That’s why some fans of the authors’ work criticized the film. Nevertheless, there were many spectators who were delighted with the film.

But a continuation of the comedy was planned. 10 years after the premiere of “Sorcerers,” Konstantin Bromberg and Boris Strugatsky were thinking about further development of the plot. The story was supposed to be about some rather criminal individuals who were trying to take the magic wand for their own gain. In the 90s, this topic was more relevant than ever.

At the same time, honest employees of the institute sought to protect the artifact from bandits by all means. As a result, the leadership of NUINU decided to move the organization to a parallel reality. However, Alena Pukhova had to return, because her daughter and husband were waiting for her in the world of ordinary people.

Bromberg and Strugatsky failed to implement this idea. They simply weren’t given any money for “Sorcerers-2.”
