The Red Sox are one of the teams that have shown interest in Puerto Rican Javier Báez, according to a report by MLB Network contributor Jon Heyman.
—
Xander Bogaerts is Boston’s starting shortstop, but the veteran’s defense is much to be desired. Since the beginning of 2016, Bogaerts adds – 40 outs above the average (OAA).
—
In the same period, Báez has +77 OAA, including 50 in the short stops.
—
Boston’s interest in the Puerto Rican could be because Bogaerts has the option to exit his contract next year.
—
Even if the Red Sox don’t want to move Bogaerts out of position, out of respect for what the gunner has brought to the organization, they could have Baez at middle for a year and then replace Bogaerts on defense (assuming he exercises his option).
